My future BMW M3 (History)
The newest addition to the M3 family, is distinguished by advanced mechanical and technical solutions, and clearly inspired by Formula 1 , as been for the last M5. In fact, the biggest turning point is that this car BMW has abandoned the scheme pluricollaudato six-cylinder in-line for a leading 8-cylinder V called S65B40. Is the displacement of 3,999 cc , and develops 420 hp with a torque of 400 Nm at 3900 rpm. This engine derives directly from the powerful V10 5 liters of E60 M5, which were removed two cylinders. The 4-liter V8 of the new M3 is indeed characterized by typical solutions of a racing car, such as the adoption of a throttle for each cylinder , which is very rare for a stock engine and not by competition. These butterflies are handled electronically, so as to eliminate the need for flow meter, which was eliminated. It has also been revised and further developed (including by the two cylinders more) variable valve timing system of "double Vanos" mounted on the previous M3. The engine of the E92 M3 can achieve even the 8300 rpm and for this reason has been improved lubrication system, to allow maximum efficiency even during heavy acceleration or deceleration, often due to phenomena of vacuum suction from the oil sump. The watchword in the design of the E92 M3 engine is fantastic and its been "lightly" so, as always about the mighty V8, the Motorsport engineers have managed to create a power unit that despite being the largest volume as , is some 15 kg lighter than the 6-cylinder 3.2-liter E46 M3. This weight saving is made possible by the massive use of aluminum alloy for the engine. Regarding le prestazioni, ancora una volta, nonostante i 250 km/h dichiarati dalla Casa, test effettuati da testate giornalistiche specializzate hanno fatto registrare un allungo massimo di ben 280 km/h, coprendo l'accelerazione da 0 a 100 km/h in 4"8 per la versione con cambio manuale a sei marce e 4"6 con il cambio sequenziale DKG (valori dichiarati dalla casa).
La leggerezza è stata voluta fortemente anche per quanto riguarda il corpo vettura: la carrozzeria presenta infatti il tetto in materiale composito, ovvero plastica rinforzata da fibra di carbonio , così come pure il cofano motore, come si è già visto sulla supersportiva della casa M6 .
