Speech therapy is a medical branch that deals with prevention, education and rehabilitation of voice of written and oral language and communication in children and adolescents , adult and geriatric .

The professional profile of the speech therapist is defined in Ministerial Decree of 14 September 1994. The academic program includes a three-year university (bachelor's level) at the faculty of medicine and surgery within different departments (ENT and SPEECH, neuropsychiatry, neurology), following the university reform are also provided for postgraduate courses. The speech deals with people with learning disabilities foniatrici ( dysphonia, dysphagia, dysarthria and atypical swallowing, cleft lip and palate , disodium, language difficulties related to deafness, stuttering ), neuropsychological disorders (aphasias , apraxia, agnosia , delayed language development, phonological disorders, learning disabilities, mental retardation, attention deficit disorder), neurobehavioral disorders (caused by head trauma, pathological events brain autism, dementia ).
